Recently, just from India's largest container port Navasheva (JNPT) in the recent cargo flow disruption to recover from the Indian cargo owners, and suffered a greater blow.

India's largest container port shut down

It is reported that last weekend India's west coast extreme weather caused the port power outage, APM Pipavav terminal (APM Pipavif Port Terminal) temporarily shut down operations.

APM Pipavif Port Terminal is located from India's largest container port Navasheva Port (JNPT) about 150 nautical miles, is said to be India's first public-private port entity, in 1998 began operations, in recent years there has been significant growth.

The latest data show that in the 2022 fiscal year, the container throughput of APM Pipavif port terminal increased by 22% to about 765000 Teu.

An APM Terminals report showed strong winds uprooting transmission towers in and around the dockside, which is estimated to keep the port's terminal operations closed until Thursday.

The port management company said: "According to the normal power supply situation, the port can handle container ships as early as the 6th. We are maintaining the cold storage reserve power supply."

However, a port official said that for now all operations are suspended.

Meanwhile, APM Terminals issued another notice declaring the port force majeure, but not specifying the time, as the closure left India's west coast with scheduled vessels in disarray.

Most of the weekly container services the West Indian Corridor have multiple stops, centered on JNPT, Mundra, Pipavav, serving cargo transportation in the northern hinterland. Local industry sources said the vessels, which were already in transit, had been transferred to Mundra.

Maersk told customers it was "making every effort" to minimize the adverse impact of the sudden port closures on service reliability.

Maersk added: "Our team is actively using railways and roads to transfer containers from Pipavav to Mundra, which continue to operate normally."

"In the coming days, these shipments may be delayed until Pipavav ports resume operations, and we are working closely with all parties involved to ensure that your cargo is safely and efficiently transported."

In addition, CMA CGM confirmed that as a result of the disruption, there had been a series of ship jumps at Pipavav terminals, including AS6 and CIX services. CMA CGM said all imported Pipavav cargo will be discharged at JNPT port.

"This is a double whammy for trade as the speed of vessel turnaround and the flow of cargo through JNPT are getting back on track after the berth closure." A freight forwarder in Mumbai said.

Spanish-American strike continues

Canadian ports to strike

The U.S. West Coast Port Terminal Union's new round of strikes entered its fifth day, and the industry has put pressure on the Biden government to intervene and resolve labor issues.

The strike was triggered by 13 months of negotiations between the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), which represents sea carriers and terminal operators, and the International Union of Terminal and Warehouse Workers (ILWU) (employers and dockers) over a new contract.

As the negotiations stalled, tensions broke out on Friday, resulting in from California to Washington state, many docks were forced to shut down, scattered strike activities in the United States on Tuesday is still continuing.

Unlike the 2015 strike, there are no boats waiting in line.

Also of note, and to the concern of shippers working on alternative plans, members of the International Terminal and Warehouse Workers Union of Canada (ILWU) will vote later this week on whether to stage a 72-hour strike in Vancouver and Prince Rupert. This will further increase stress and congestion on the East Coast.

Contrary to expectations of a return to normal after the weekend, Long Beach's two marinas and Los Angeles's one marina continued to close Monday.

The Port of Long Beach informed customers that two of its terminals were closed for "operational necessity" and Fenix Marine Services, one of Los Angeles' three container terminals shut down by strike action, on Monday morning notified truckers that "due to unforeseen circumstances" it would cancel certain area import appointments.

Operations appear to have returned to normal other ports along the U. S.-West Coast. The Port of Oakland said the labor shortage that closed its container terminal Friday has been resolved.

ILWU stressed that contract talks, which began a year ago, were continuing. According to one report, the two sides have been quite contested

reached a "preliminary agreement" on the automation issue, there are still major differences on the issue of compensation. According to the PMA, the dispute has the potential to result in the permanent transfer of goods to other East Coast ports.
