Maersk: Number of 'green' customers to double next year

Recently, Maersk said that the EU's upcoming carbon emission quota policy will, to a certain extent, force more and more world-renowned shippers to use green fuel navigation to pay extra.

Upcoming EU quotas will make more customers pay a premium for sailing - in part - on green fuels

Compared to 2019 with only a few key customers, Maersk this year has increased the number of "green" customers to about 300.

Maersk expects that next year, for part of the use of sustainable fuel transport containers and pay premium customers will double to 600 or so, its big customers include H & M, Nike, Amazon and Novo Nordisk and other companies.

In addition, last month, the industry's well-known BCO, Swedish car manufacturer Volvo (Volvo) announced that it will mainly use renewable fuel container ships to transport materials used in the production of its cars worldwide, and designated Maersk, Dexun and DB Schenker as its royal shipping logistics service provider (and planned partner).

And as a selected requirement, Volvo (Volvo) requires Maersk, Dexun and DB Schenker all Volvo transport containers, will use renewable fuel container ships!

Maersk energy products division director Gary Downes said: "green shipping products Eco Delivery since the launch has been planned to develop, its number is growing every year, we expect this situation will continue."

All customers are committed to so-called science-based goals, which means that their decarbonization efforts follow the most accepted standards.

These companies have climate plans that include Scope 3 emission reduction targets-requiring their carriers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This is why they chose to add biofuels to the fuel mix and are willing to pay additional costs.

Downes explained: "Decarbonization is hard, but from calculating emissions is easy."

"As a carrier, we have primary data on fuel consumption that can be used to calculate emissions. If you want to achieve public goals, understanding Scope 3's emissions is important, and correct calculation of emissions is essential."

It is understood that choose Eco Delivery customers usually need for every 40 feet of containers to pay 10% to 15% of the cost.

From January 2024, when shipping is included in the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and must pay an emissions fee, Maersk will impose a new surcharge on customers to cover the increased costs.

However, the purchase of green shipping products customers will be excluded from the additional costs.

"Eco Delivery customers will not be charged the new ETS surcharge. As a result, the gap between sailing with fossil fuels and with biofuels will be halved." Downes explained.

Maersk said that so far, Eco Delivery about 3% of its total customers, but it aims to reach 25% of green fuel shipments by 2030.

A shipping founder, "Mike's Tea Room" director Zhong Zhe Chao has in a review program pointed out: at present, including Ikea, Volvo (Volvo), a growing number of large European and American shippers, has been the production enterprises and transport logistics enterprises of green emissions, as (bidding or selection of logistics service providers) when a new requirement;

And to Dexun, DSV and DB Schenker led part of the international logistics giants, but also has begun to meet the requirements of European and American shippers, the green low-carbon as a service feature and grasp!
