MSC is 2M alliance after the disintegration of business arrangements to prepare, and began to independently operate two original 2M alliance joint venture routes!

MSC independently operates two routes

Earlier this year, MSC and Maersk Group issued a joint statement that the two companies have agreed to terminate the 2M alliance in 2025.

In March this year, MSC said that it would resume a single route connecting Asia and the Mediterranean market called 'Dragon'-the route previously provided by the previous 2M alliance, which was suspended in May 2020.

, with the blessing of MSC's large capacity, MSC injected a batch of larger ship capacity into the route, making it a new independent loop. In May this year, the route also after a lapse of 5 years again began to call Dalian.

It is understood that MSC recently further expanded its own independent operating routes of business scale.

just over a month ago, MSC restarted a route from Asia to northern Europe called Swan, which was previously jointly operated with Maersk. Not only that, recently the company will also South Korea's Busan and Germany's Bremerhaven added to the route's port of call list.

during the outbreak, the 2M Alliance stopped the Swan/AE2 loop route, but then as demand recovered, the 2M Alliance did not resume the route smoothly. Then in May this year, MSC decided to independently resume this route, and launched a direct competition with the alliance in the market of multiple loops.

When the route was just resumed, the first flight in June was successively called: Qingdao, Ningbo, Yantian, Tanjung Pelepas, Antwerp, Gdynia, Gdansk, Klaipeda (Lithuania), King Abdullah Port (Jeddah), Singapore and other ports returned to Qingdao Port.

, according to the latest arrangement of MSC, the company plans to add links to Busan port in South Korea and Bremerhaven in Germany from the end of August. MSC said it would "meet the needs of our customers".

And Alphaliner analysts believe that in order to independently support this route, MSC had to increase the supply by adding additional affiliation.

The analyst firm went on to say that because "freight demand from the Far East to Europe is sluggish, which is why the current route previously only deployed five 7400 teu to 15260 teu vessels."

Alphaliner said: "The addition of the ports of Busan and Bremerhaven will help fill the cargo holds of the 13000 - 14000 TEU ships that MSC plans to depart from Asia in August."

MSC Capacity Increase

According to Alphaliner data, in the first half of this year, as the world's largest container shipping company, Mediterranean Shipping continued to significantly expand its capacity.

Compared with the 4.6 million TEU capacity at the beginning of this year, by the middle of June this year, MSC's capacity increased by 12.2 to 5.16 million TEU.

As of today (August 2),MSC's new ship order book has 116 ships, with a total capacity of 1.5 million TEU of new ship capacity waiting for delivery.

not only that, the company is still aggressively buying used container ships. According to Sindh Maritime Network, only recently MSC has successively bought three container ships named MAERSK LAUNCESTON (4,500 teu), ZHONG GU JIANG SU (4,892 teu) and SHEFFIELD (2,532 teu).

According to Alphaliner statistics, in the purchase of the above three ships, the company from August 2020 to buy a total number of ships reached 318!

Test management ability

According to Alpahliner statistics, a total of 29 container ships of all types were delivered worldwide last month. We saw that although MSC's pick-up volume was slightly lower than the previous month, the company still received a number of large container ships in July. And in the coming weeks and months, the company will have more large ships delivered.

a large number of new ship deliveries, MSC said it could absorb some of the capacity by slowing down and injecting more capacity into the 2M alliance's ring line. Still, this does not absorb all the new shipping capacity as well as the newly bought used shipping capacity.

In this case, MSC will inevitably open up a large number of their own independent operation of the route.

In fact, MSC is still taking a lot of measures, such as by upgrading the route of the new acceptance of the ship gradually into the route to go.

Industry analysis agency Maritime Strategies International deputy director Daniel Richards said, considering the MSC order size, Maersk will be in 2M cooperation after the end of the face "to provide direct connection services difficult decision".

Unless Maersk cooperates with other shipping companies, it will need to replace the missing MSC ship capacity to maintain its port coverage and market share. "
